Baba's projects win the Highway Africa new media award
September 15, 2007
Babak Fakhamzadeh and Ismail Farouk won the prestigious Highway Africa new media award for their website Soweto uprisings . com.
The website details the events of the June 16th 1976 uprisings in Soweto, an event that many consider the beginning of the end of apartheid, and is a mashup of services such as Google Maps, Flickr and Wikipedia.
Although the technology behind Soweto uprisings . com is becoming more and more mainstream, it's particularly the social relevance of the website which is the reason for it winning the Highway Africa award.
At the prize ceremony on September 11, Soweto uprisings . com was called "the most innovative site in Africa".
